"A medium sized map set in an old industrial building, in the middle of a heavy thunderstorm."
Map description

Rankin is a Deathmatch map from Unreal Tournament 2004.

Map description[]

Rankin is an old industrial building. The match takes place in the middle of a storm, which is reflected in the many leaks around the map. as well as the rainy skybox on the outside.

The map has the following areas:

  • Factory Area 1: The west side of the map.
    • Flak Room: A room located north of the map, in the very middle, contains the eponymous weapon in the lower level as well as a dodgeable ramp from low to mid, and a wooden bridge over the entrance to the Basement leading to a shortcut that leads to the Shield Pack.
    • Basement: The lowest level of the map, it's a series of intersecting corridors that hold the Rocket Launcher at the very west (between two wooden ramps to mid) and the Super Shield Pack at the very south (beneath a dropping from upper mid).
    • Western Area: The three-levelled area that comprises the West wing of the Basement and the ramps from (and to) Flak Area.
    • Shock Rifle Area: The two-levelled area at the west that holds the eponymous weapon in the lower level as well as the elevator that allows players to reach the second level. Also contains two dodgeable metal plates near the bridge entrance from Basement that serves as another way to reach the upper level.
    • South Corridor (West): A mid-level corridor. Contains two entrances to the Western Area, and two ways to reach the upper level: a dodgeable plate near the Bio Rifle, and a wooden bridge on the other end.
  • Factory Area 2: The east side of the map.
    • Amp Area: Located east of the Flak Room, it's a two-level area. In the lower level there's a L-shaped corner which contains the Double Damage, while the upper level overlooks the Flak and Shock Rifle areas and contains the Lightning Gun.
    • South Corridor (East): A corridor that begins where the Bio Rifle is found, comprises the intersection with the Shock Rifle area, all the way until the Eastern corridor begins.
    • Lower Corridor: A small turning that connects the lower level Flak and Shock Rifle areas, serving as a quicker alternative to the Amp Area.
  • Shield Pack Corridor: An upper level corridor that connects the Western Area, the Flak Area (at the intersection) and the Shock Rifle Area.
  • Eastern Corridor: A corridor located east of the level, a ramp connects both levels of the Shock Rifle Area, and on the other extreme connects the area with the South Corridor (East). Holds the Link Gun.

Tips and tricks[]

  • In the first floor, you can find many metal plates lying at diagonal angles against the walls. These ramps lead to the second floor. You can Dodge on the plates to slide up them. If you find yourself falling short, just jump at the peak of the slide to get all the way up. Some of these plates even include a wall nearby for wall-jump galore:
    • Shock Rifle to Bio Rifle
    • Bio Rifle to Minigun
    • near Flak Cannon
    • near the Rocket Launcher
  • Turn the Shield Gun's alternate before approaching the Super Shield Pack from above. Your opponent(s) might decide to welcome you with a shock combo.
  • On the top floor, there are vents which can be accessed to provide shortcuts around the map.
  • The Super Shield Pack is positioned so that it is difficult to acquire without fighting. It is recommended to get weapons and health quickly.

Trivia[]

  • This is one of the maps that came with the demo version of UT2004, the other being AS-Convoy, BR-Colossus, CTF-BridgeOfFate and ONS-Torlan. A later version of the demo added CTF-FaceClassic and ONS-Primeval.
  • Until the stats for the game were shut down, the map held the distinction of being the most played UT2004 map of all-time, with more than 2.500.000 matches, almost 1.000.000 matches over its escort, CTF-FaceClassic.[1] Not only it became one of the most popular maps of the game, but as such it also saw quite the action on tournament play, being the final stage of most tournaments. A fixed edition of the map for tournament play is ranked seventh with more than 500.000 matches being played on it.
