The Kai are a race found in Unreal II: The Awakening.

Overview

The Kai are a race of normadic aliens. They have soft bodies with thin limbs, and are only barely humanoid in appearance. An apparently weak and pacifistic race, the Kai are employed to do menial tasks and are generally looked down upon and degraded by the galaxy's other races. Several Kai are seen serving in the TCA as cooks and low-level labor. For some reason they are somehow linked with the nature of the much coveted Artifact.

It is ultimately revealed that an ancient race known as the Tosc hid their DNA within the genetic structure of the Kai, and thus in fact one of the galaxy's most downtrodden races is actually the last remnants of one of the galaxy's most dangerous races.

Involvement in the games

• A Kai is present on Avalon, standing in the tower.
• A dead Kai is found on Hell in one of the tunnels.
• One was present on Janus, guarding two artifacts and not opening the door for either John Dalton or Dr. Meyer, until asked politely.
• Another Kai is seen aboard the Dorian Gray, being transformed into a Tosc.

Trivia

• The Kai bear a resemblance to the Vortigaunts from the Half-Life series.
• If a Kai is spawned using console commands in the presence of a Marine, the latter will attack the Kai.
• The Kai on Janus is said to have been "all over the artifacts" ever since Axon retrieved them, and never lets them out of his sight. This could be a foreshadowing to the revelation of the Kai containing the DNA of the Tosc.
